In the production process, I feel more rewarding: 1. Through understanding other works, I learned to combine the play with the theme. Although watching this little game after the end of the project will feel that its theme seems a little far-fetched. But this is very necessary. The change of playing method needs to be reasonable. It’s not just a simple change in an operation mode, but also a match with the content of the game. 2. Changing the way of hardware input will really get unexpected gains. In fact, before this, I doubt whether this game will achieve the desired effect. Now I don’t doubt it, because my A and L keys are about to be broken.

If you let me reflect on this development process again.

  1. I may choose to find a partner who is familiar with hardware. Because in the test process, many problems will appear in my slightly modified pedal. Such as poor contact and position deviation. Because its own shape is not suitable for “shaking legs”. Maybe using a sensor like switch is a better choice. I also imagined using the shaft of a mechanical keyboard to make a pedal. But I don’t have the right tools. Of course, as a game designer, I should focus more on game design than hardware.
  2. I also need to be more familiar with the application of engine and code. My development time is a bit long. This led me to make only two patterns. If we can come up with a solution faster. I can focus more on the design of the game content.

On the whole, the game basically reached my expectations. Try friends can experience some unusual fun from the game. They can shake their legs freely in PVP mode. But it has only two modes, and I haven’t had time to do more modes yet. At first, I wanted to make it into a series of small games related to shaking legs. But time doesn’t seem to allow. Another key problem is that it needs special equipment (pedals) to play, although players can use keyboard or mouse instead of it. But these are two completely different feelings. It can be described as almost two games. The limitation of hardware determines the actual playing scene of this game. Actually, there are some similar games on switch, which can be operated by gravity sensor of switch. For example, in the great adventure of fitness ring, players can tie the handle to their legs for exercise. Therefore, hardware is also an important part of game creativity.

During the production process, I figured out how to use the code of this kind of game with the help of information and friends. When thinking of solutions, there is one point worthy of attention-frequency. Generally speaking, our understanding of frequency is the speed of clicking in a period of time. But it doesn’t seem to be well reflected in the game. Because the images in the game should have real-time feedback. Players need to get a little feedback every time they step on the pedal.

Take 1v1 mode, for example, we compare the frequency of players in a short period of time, and then feed this comparison back to the screen. Then there will be some hysteresis. It feels like running on the ice. The feeling of manipulation is not very good.

Is It A New Genre?

What makes Death Stranding a new genre is the fact that it was built to allow the community to connect and completely change the game over time in an organic, spontaneous way. However, what holds the game back is the way that it is too bogged down by other focuses. The core gameplay loop of fetch quests discourages many people from joining the community, and keeps players from being able to take full advantage of the most interesting parts of the game. Ideally, the ability to to join an online community that slowly alters the game experience over time would be accessible, exciting, and fun.

Death Stranding introduces enough new ideas and mechanics to qualify as belonging to a new genre, but it is not genre-defining. Hopefully future games will take advantage of the multiplayer ideas pioneered by Death Stranding without getting bogged down by mundane mechanics and a prohibitively confusing story. The potential for something extremely new and interesting is hinted at by Death Stranding, but the game does not represent the fulfillment of that potential.

Introducing a new genre and defining it with a single game is a very difficult thing to try to do. Death Stranding offers enough new ideas to set it apart, which is plenty enough to make the game a conceptual success.

The game is also fun for enough people to warrant a good deal of commercial success, so it is easy to imagine that its influence will be felt for some time to come. Perhaps the lasting impression that it leaves on games as a whole will only be calculable in a few years time, when the potential for community creations is fully understood and some other titles have taken their own shots at similar ideas.

This mode is very simple and intuitive. In order to achieve the goal of letting players shake their legs. The best way is to bring another player to fight.

Game mechanism: Two players control their pedals. If you meet an opponent with the same frequency as you, the factor that determines the outcome of the game may become endurance. In many matches, we can’t tell who has the higher frequency, and in the end, one of them surrendered because of tired legs. I think it is necessary for me to explain the precautions when playing this game. Please don’t shake your legs desperately to win, and don’t play for a long time. Otherwise, you might get hurt.

Therefore, in my thesis, I will analyze the changes brought by “asynchronous online” to games.It is in line with the social way of people in this era.The main analysis object is death stranding.Because this work brings its design to the extreme, I will analyze in detail how it connects players all over the world.

So what does asynchronous online bring to death stranding

As for asynchronous online games, I still take Death Stranding as an example.So what impact does asynchronous online have on its core gameplay?We can simply understand it as moving from location a to location b.In this process, players will encounter terrain obstacles.At this time, there are two choices.Use other people’s props or build their own props.These two behaviors can also occur simultaneously.It depends on the player’s choice.But it is more convenient to use other people’s props.For example, a zip line is useless. At present, frequency is the best to control, and it is also the easiest to use in games. This game is similar to a game that can be controlled by clicking on the screen with one finger or using only one key. It is not easy to control the frequency of both feet. People’s leg nerves are less developed and flexible than their hands. I don’t want the game to be too difficult. I just want to have some unusual fun while playing.

【About frequency】

The higher the frequency of pedaling, the stronger the feedback players get. Then, let’s think again about what will make people trample or shake in their life. Shaking your legs is a common behavior. People often unconsciously shake their legs. This kind of habit is bad for others, and may even be hated by others. Therefore, we might as well take shaking legs as the input mode of the game. Let players shake their legs.

I bought a pair of pedals, but not a mouse. It is similar in shape to the pedal of a racing game controller. I seem to need to change the shape of it. Because when a person shakes his legs, his forefoot touches the ground. The pedal need to be fixed on the foot. It needs to be thinner, and can be fixed on the floor.

I’m trying to figure out how to maximize the thrill of shaking my legs. I think we should set up a two-player mode, just like pressing a button quickly in the game. My goal is to get players to shake their legs.

At the same time, I hope to design a single pattern. We can realize some other operations by using the dithering rhythm. If the narrative of the game could be based on shaking legs, it would be even better. I think I should analyze the behavior of shaking my legs from a certain angle, or give it some meaning.

As far as the current information is concerned, I have a general goal:

  1. Make a game using pedal to input signals.
  2. At least two modes, one of which is the two-person battle mode
  3. Fully let the players “shake their legs”
  4. Combine this way with the game content. It’s not just replacing the mouse with a pedal

I can imagine the way of playing this game and the effect I want to achieve. Now, I want to think about how to give it a theme. At first, I named the game SHAKER. The name are very simple and intuitive. But it has a different meaning. Maybe shaking your legs can make players shake things that look great. What does a simple behavior have to do with a big thing? I came up with something related to environmental protection. Can I make a mode in which players can control the rhythm of shaking their legs to avoid obstacles or eat targets?

Because in previous experiments, I tested the frequency of input signal with pedal through a website that records the click frequency. I found that:

  1. The frequency of shaking legs can be kept as stable as that of hand points. However, it is difficult to control the rapid conversion from one frequency to another.
  2. Shake your legs for a long time, deliberately control the frequency, and get tired. If you happen to have a foot pedal, I strongly recommend you try it.

Therefore, it’s a very difficult game. Then it all seems to make sense. The story of the game can be said as follows: the original clean environment becomes abnormal because of rubbish. The quiet life of those who sleep on the bottom of the sea was broken. Players need to clean up garbage in some way (while avoiding normal creatures), which is much more difficult than ordinary way. This is a simple reason. Problems caused by people’s random behavior need to be solved in more difficult ways. Add a meaningful theme to the game.

This is the first week of experimental development. I’m more concerned about what kind of starting point I should start studying. For me, the discussion about simple play seems quite boring, and I have not had any unique and interesting inspiration for the game mechanism recently.

I’m very interested in a comment: playing games with my feet. It’s a kind of ridicule. But can I try to change the input mode of the game? Most games are completed by keyboard, mouse, handle or some somatosensory devices. It seems to be a feasible way to play games by stepping on your feet.

However, this is not a simple change in the input mode. We have to make it seem reasonable. Combine it with the content of the game. If it is simple, replace the mouse or keyboard with the way of stepping on the feet. It should seem stiff and strange.

I’d like to find some information. Data come from two aspects: 1. Games in which signals are inputted in a special way; 2. Some research on the way of inputting signals with pedals, such as using scenarios or industrial designs. See if you can give me some inspiration.

The Biped developed by NExT has made similar attempt. The walking mode of the protagonist of the game robot is that two legs correspond to two rockers of the handle respectively.
